From email to a writer friend:
dearest! last night the most extraordinary... you've heard about the shooting here last week? Nine people were murdered in the AME church downtown by a 21 year old racist. Close range, terrible words, horrifying. Our neighbor Cynthia Hurd, a sweet librarian, lost her life. The whole town deeply shaken. But something incredible's been happening. People going out of their way to stop and talk to one another in the street, from their porches. Vigils everywhere. And last night a march of nearly 20,000 over the Ravenel Bridge, singing Amazing Grace, everyone holding hands, minutes of silence at the top. Boats pulled up underneath to play music and cheer for us; cars rolled to a stop and sang too, everyone exchanging peace signs. I still have goosebumps. A change gonna come? Comments are closed.
